Keith Rowe / Burkhard Beins ErstLive 001 (erstwhile records)

For me no piece of music was more of 2004 then this one. It captures so well the anger, frustration and horror that has been this year of war, propaganda, deceit and ego. Consider as well the events just prior to this May performance: the failed initiative in Falluja with US troops pulled out just the week before, the horrors of Abu Garib all over the news with news of worse photos and official “apologies” coming from the Pentagon and the White House. The opening radio capture of dispassionate, almost numbers station-esque Iraq war reportage while ominous sounds stir restlessly below sets a tone of foreboding that the rest of the performance is contained within. The radio fades away, with bits and pieces of it saved to arise occasionally, but mostly replaced by a miasma of the sounds of unease. Arising out of the din, the faint sounds of Son of a Preacher Man uncharacteristically brought louder and continuing on until the noise of amplified chains obliterates it. This serendipitous and brilliant capture further underscores the times in relation to the relentless US election coverage. The anger, confusion and chaos in this short performance is inseparable from 2004 and will stand as one of the great performances created in reaction to the events of the day. Beyond that the energy, the unexpectedness, the choices, reactions and counter-reactions led to a powerful and moving piece of music.
